Hint- its not how you use the word

Sandra asks…
Does Google save energy by going black?
It claims it doesnt because “Modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display”
But what about Blackle.com? It claims it’s saved 535,441.256 Watt hours.
Is Google lying or is Blackle lying?

Black Google is very cool today

Carol asks…
How does having a Black Screen save energy? Blackle or (Black Google) claims so. Is it right?
www.blackle.com (also known as Black Google)
admin answers:
I GET THIS FROM WIKIPEDIA
The principle behind Blackle is based on the fact that the display of different colors consumes different amounts of energy on computer monitors.[3] The creators of Blackle cite a 2002 study from Roberson, who tested a variety of CRT and LCD monitors and found that an all black screen consumed less energy than an all white screen on all of them.[3]
The creators of Blackle state that the idea behind the site came from a blog, which estimated that a black Google would save 750 megawatt-hours a year[1]. A megawatt-hour is the equivalent of ten thousand 100 watt light bulbs burning continuously for 1 hour. On the Blackle homepage, the creators of Blackle provide a count of the number of watt-hours that they claim the users of Blackle have collectively saved.
[edit] Functionality
Because it is not owned by Google Inc., the Blackle site lacks many of the features of conventional Google, including the ‘Cached’ and ‘Similar Pages’ options, and it does not have as many of the corresponding links that can be found on the Google homepage. These links include items such as preferences, advanced search, language tools, images, groups, news, scholar, and the iGoogle features.
Blackle is a Google Custom Search partner, which allows for the customization of the returned search results. As such, a search in Blackle does not necessarily return the same results as a Google search.
[edit] Criticism
The creators of Blackle have been criticized for lack of clarity regarding the type, size and manufacturer of monitor that the power usage claims refer to. One critic, a technology journalist who reviews computer hardware, tested four cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors and 23 liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors, and found that power was saved by the CRT monitors, but was less than that claimed by the blog post that inspired Blackle. The LCD monitors tested showed increased power use in the majority of cases, although most of the larger (24 inch) monitors did use less power displaying a black screen.[1][4][5]
Relative to other energy saving initiatives, it has been suggested that the energy savings of Blackle is small. For example, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a consortium of large software and hardware vendors that promotes efficient computing on a large scale, is forecasting a power saving of 10,000 MW by 2010. [6]

Lizzie asks…
What are you doing to save the environment and energy?
Ways that you are helping to save energy and the enviroment.
I use http://www.blackseeker.co.uk/ everyday instead of google, because it saves more energy as it’s black.
I also use http://www.everyclick.com/ to raise money for charities though it doesn’t have much to do with the environment
I recylce as much paper as I can and I’m forever turning off lights
What ways do you use to save energy and the environment?
admin answers:
Besides buying energy efficiant appliances, we are driving way less that we used to, turning off lights, recycling cans, paper, grocery bags, and electronics, and are very careful to restrict as much water use as possible. All of these things also help cut our bills. But, we (the whole family) also belongs to a watershed group and are active in environmental issues and programs. And yes, we clean roads & streams.

Paul asks…
Have you heard of ‘Blackle’, the ENERGY SAVING Google?
Did you know that a white computer screen uses more energy than a black computer screen?
Those clever people have invented a black google called ‘Blackle’
Use that instead of google…
This is not really a question but I just wanted to share …

Betty asks…
how exactly does blackle save energy?
well compared to regular google it is supposed to save energy. So anyways, how does it do it. Less light? or what?
admin answers:
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002

David asks…
Does unplugging appliances when going away really save energy?
I have heard that you can save on your energy bill by unplugging such things as computers, TV’s, & major appliances (no, not fridge or freezer!) if you are going to be away from home for awhile. Does anyone know if this is true, what kind of savings are we talking here? Also, would really like links to any sites that discuss such things. (Please don’t just tell me to Google it, I know that much already.) Thanks!
admin answers:
Yea it can save some… But not much in most houses a few kwh a month at about 7 to 11 cents a kwh so you MIGHT save a dollar a month

Chris asks…
Does Blackle really save energy?
I’ve heard that Blackle (a Black version of the Google search engine) saves energy because of its black screen vs. the standard white. Is Blackle really that energy efficient, or doesn’t it make a big difference.
admin answers:
Blackle does save energy because it takes the computer monitor less energy to display a black screen instead of a white one (just like when your computer switches to sleep mode, it take it less energy to standby rather than display whatever program you might have running). Of course, it won’t make enough of a difference for you to see on electricity bill, but over time if everyone used it, it might just save a lot. That’s good enough for me! ![]()
