Your Questions About Windmill Power

Michael Your Questions About Windmill Power

Michael asks…

I have a school project and I need to make a windmill power a light bulb. Any Ideas?

I need an idea for my school project on how a windmill can power a small electricity source. Someone please help me due at the end of Feb. 2011!

I don’t have answers, just direction.

Use a small flashlight bulb.

If the bulb is meant to be powered by 3vdc, get a 3vdc motor from a toy or something and and connect it to the propeller assembly.

If you get a lamp rated at, for example, 3 watts, it will need 3/746 * 1 hp to light it. (746w = 1hp.)
1 hp = 550 ft*lb/sec You need about 550/243 = 2 ft*lb/sec

You could aim a hair dryer (heat off) at your propeller and see how much voltage you get from the motor. If you need more voltage bend the blades further back from the perpendicular.

If the voltage droops too much when you connect the light, try addiing more blades or make them wider or longer.

Hey abeer!

The basics things you will need are windmill blades and a generator. You probably know this anyway but i’ll tell you just in case. The wind turns the blades which are connected to the generator which generates electricity. You just connect this to the light bulb then and it will light.

You should be able to buy a small generator online but you know some old bicycles used to have small generators that touched the wheel and lighted the front light so you might be able to find one of them.

Anyway sorry hope you get a better answer : )
