Aside from the PR incentives why do utilities companies provide rebates and $ incentives to save energy?
I was recently posed the question as to why a “Utilities” company would pay incentives to a company that provides an energy reduction service.
At first I thought it had something to do with the deregulation of energy. It would seem that if “Utilities” means the energy producer then they are actually losing money both from giving incentives and from the reduction in energy usage. If “Utilities” mean the energy distributor then the same is true because, in all likelihood, their income is based off of a percentage of what they are transmitting. While public relations explains a small part of this reason, it still does not explain why a company would pay incentives to a third party company to essentially reduce their product sales.
I can understand if there is an area like California that experiences frequent brown or blackouts, but the energy conservation company exists regardless of market energy demands. So what is the incentive for a company that makes money by selling energy to pay money to a company that essentially reduces there net profits?

A) having customers reduce their peak use is far cheaper than paying for a generator that will work less than 1 month per year.
B) the calif utilities board has required PG&E to offer rebates.

Don’t you think it’s stupid for the electric company to say, buy fluorescent bulbs so you can save energy?
and then they go to the government and say, we aren’t making enough money, and ask for permission to raise the rates.
and they get the permission every time, and then you don’t save any money after all.

Totally agree with the point of energy efficiency will reduce the need for new power plants but according to you (which I personally do save money so I can’t say that you are correct) we switch to energy efficient appliances, lights, and climate control (heating and AC) and they raise your price you say we get nothing but you miss the point even if you broke even on cost it would mean pollution from power plants would go down dramatically. Did you spend anytime thinking your question through or did the need to rant take over? M
I understand when they raise rates everybody wants to rant but try to pick a valid point and I hope you end up saving more than they raise your rates.

Energy and gas prices are set on the commodities market, so you really can’t save much by switching to a different company. Companies use these come ones to get new people.

Could be ignorance. Some people still have not grasped it yet that energy saving industry has become such a huge industry with companies that are solely dedicated to the industry and to nothing else. Energy efficiency or saving services, up until recently, have only been performed as add-on services by companies doing other businesses.
This is could be the reason why they laugh when you say that you work for an Energy Saving company.

My gas company says that to save money and energy, to keep the thermostat at 66 degrees.?
What kind of advice is this? Why don’t we just turn it completely off and live like the Eskimos then? I wonder how many of the company excecutives keep their thermostat at 66. Where do you keep your thermostat? My suggestion to the gas company is to stop wasting my money by airing that stupid commercial, and to lower their profit margins. I don’t need them to waste my money by stating the obvious, that if you lower your thermostat you will use less gas. Wow, what a stroke of genious.

Unfortunately, this is the one universal answer that applies to every house or building and that is why it is the first thing out of the so called “experts”. The other answers which are much more expensive and depend on the quality of construction of an existing building are to seal any cracks (with caulking), make sure doors closes tightly (weatherstripping), adding insulation, upgrading to double or triple pane windows, etc. These are expensive options that most people could not do “today”. Furthermore, well built houses with triple pane windows and lots of R24 insulation or higher would not get much benefit.
When I lived in the north, I kept my thermostat at 60. Now I live in the south and keep my thermostat on 66 and wear a flannel shirt, sweater or sweatshirt (depending on the days activities). I do get a smile when I’m outside and my neighbors heat pumps turn on 3 or 4 times before mine turns on 1 time. Yes, everyone likes to whine and moan about price gouging by energy companies and global warming, but it seems as if everyone else wants somebody else to make the sacrifices.
Yes, no heat would save much more energy but cause many other problems. Your house would start to deteriorate due to higher cycles of heat/ cool/heat temperature changes, increased sickness, etc. 66 while slightly uncomfortable can be handled with an extra layer of clothing and avoids many other issues.

I have just graduated from an environmental program at a university. I took courses such as “Resource Management”, where we looked at natural resources, their impact on the ecosystem, the problems in their management, and the interaction between our society and the physical environment.Hydrology courses. Industrial geography. Environmental Policy/Politics. Environmental law (while this may be a tought course, I took it and it was of very beneficial use. It was very similar to my environmental politics course). Environmental planning. Environmental Impact Assessment (this course can teach you how to properly assess the possible impacts of any project a company is planning. It will teach you the right ways of conducting the impact, and what areas to look for when doing such an assessment: such as ecology, water, air, social and economic, etc.).
I did take some of these courses, while some I was unable to take because they are not offered anymore at my university. Take advantage of as many as you can! Hope this helped!
