Chris Your Questions About Windmill Lakes

Chris asks…

Excel: return text in a string that matches text in a column?

The following question was answered, but it did not work. I used the User Defined Function RANGEMATCH, and pasted the code in the macro. I am using Excel 2000, version 9.0.6926. Answer #1 is close to what I want to achieve. When I create a new macro the following is what it looks like before editing it.

Sub RANGE()

‘ RANGE Macro
‘ Macro recorded 10/27/2008 by Administrator

Application.CommandBars(“Stop Recording”).Visible = False
Application.Goto Reference:=”RANGE”
End Sub

Basically I am trying to search for a particular phrase within a string of text in a single cell, and returning that particular phrase as the answer. But there are 18 particular phrases to choose from in one column, ie “Foster Glen”

I have a column P with text (250 rows) and I have a column Z with with 18 phrases to search from. I want a formula to return the specific text in column Z that matches the text in the string of a cell in column P, in the same row but in Column AA.

Example
Column P,
Lot 45 Block Foster Oaks
Lot 141,142 Block Hazel Wood 3
Lot 6 Block 2 Stewarts Forest 1
Lot 27 Block 4 Foster Glen 1

Column Z,
Woodbranch
Roman Forest
Windmill estates
Sunset Ridge
Grand lake estates
Foster Glen

I want “Foster Glen” to show up in column AA but in the same row as the string that it matches.

Thanks for any help.

John

Answer:
P1 to P4 = your four LOT entries
Z1 to Z6 = your six Search for text entries.
AA1 to AA6 = results

I wasn’t exactly sure what you were asking for. So I gave two solutions (below) for these two types of results…
1.) AA4 = Foster Glen
2.) AA6 = Lot 27 Block 4 Foster Glen 1

1.) AA4 = Foster Glen
Had to Make a User Defined Function called RANGEMATCH.
Record a dummy macro, Edit it, Paste the following code in its place.

Function RANGEMATCH(SearchIn As Range, SearchFor As Range)

‘ RANGEMATCH Function
‘ Macro recorded 10/23/2008

For Each Cell In SearchFor
If InStr(SearchIn, Cell) Then
RANGEMATCH = Cell.Value
Else
RANGEMATCH = “”
End If
Next Cell

End Function

Put in AA1 the formula
=RANGEMATCH(P1,$Z$1:$Z$6)
and drag/copy it down to AA4

P1 is the relative referenced cell that you want to search within. $Z$1:$Z$6 is the absolute referenced cells that you want each text entry to search for within P1.

————————–

2.) AA6 = Lot 27 Block 4 Foster Glen 1

Paste this formula in AA1 and drag/copy down to AA6
=INDEX($P$1:$P$4,MATCH
(“*”&Z1&”*”,$P$1:$P$4,0))

…all on one line

$P$1:$P$4 are the absolute referenced cells that you want to search within. Z1 is the relative referenced cell that you are searching for the text within $P$1:$P$4

admin answers:

This CSE formula should work

=INDEX(Z:Z,MATCH(999, IF( ISNUMBER( SEARCH(” “&$Z$1:$Z$60&” ” , ” “&P1&” “)), ROW($Z$1:$Z$60) )))

Put this in AA1, pressing Ctrl-Shift-Enter (Cmd+Return for Mac) when the formula is entered.

Drag it down the length of your data in column P.

How this works

SEARCH(Z1,P1) returns a number if Z1 is a substring of P1 (eg. “Tom” is a substring of “Jones, Tom A.”, if Z1 is not in P1 it returns an error.

ISNUMBER(SEARCH(Z1,P1)) returns TRUE or FALSE if Z1 is in P1

Adding the space delimiters ISNUMBER(SEARCH(” “&Z1&” “, ” “&P1&” “)) adds a whole word requirement
ISNUMBER(SEARCH(” “&”tom”&” “, ” “&”Jones, Tom A.”&” “)) returns TRUE
ISNUMBER(SEARCH(” “&”tom”&” “, ” “&”tomato soup”&” “)) returns false

(Forgetting the space delimiters for clarity)
The Array formula
ISNUMBER(SEARCH(Z1:Z20,P1)) returns an array of TRUE/FALSE
{ Z1 is in P1, Z2 is in P1,…,Z20 is in P1}

IF(ISNUMBER( SEARCH(Z1:Z20,P1)), ROW(Z1:Z20))
returns an array of either FALSE (if Zi is not in P1) or the row number i, if Zi is in P1.

=MATCH(999,IF(…)) returns the last number from that array or #N/A if the IF(..) array is all FALSE’s.
Note that row MATCH(999, IF(… SEARCH(Z1:Z20,P1) …)) of column Z holds a sub-string of P1

INDEX(Z:Z,MATCH(…)) returns the value from column Z row MATCH(…)

Making the Z1:Z20 absolute and leaving P1 relative keeps the formula looking in $Z$1:$Z$20 to see if any of those are a sub-string of Pi.

Thomas Your Questions About Windmill Lakes

Thomas asks…

Help, name this movie that I vaguely remember!?

When I was a kid, I remember watching a movie about a teenage boy that was trying to solve a mystery about a monster being in a lake. Any of this information could be wrong, but this is what I remember from the movie:
-the monster was actually a crane that was in the lake
-The crane rose up and down from air that was still in it
-the boy is thought to be dead because he goes in the water, but he lives because there is an air supply underwater in the crane
-the boy has a rocket powered bike (an inventive boy)
-At the edge of the lake there is a wooden windmill with a dead man’s bones looking out to the water
-The boy visits a Aborigine that knows something about the monster

This is all I remember. Do you know what this movie is called? I am pretty sure that it would have been made between 1975-1995.

James Your Questions About Windmill Lakes

James asks…

Name that Movie..this has been bugging me for 10+ years?

OK, all you movie buffs heres a hard one for you.

The Movie is most likely mid-late 80′s, could be made for tv.

Please bear with me, this movie is about as vivid in my mind as my 5th birthday, lol (im 26)

Plot: A boy and family have been plagued by a lake monster at a lake that used to be a rock quarry. Every time the monster shows up, right before, it gets windy and a windmill starts turning really fast. In the end, it turns out to be a old steam shovel that was at the bottom of the lake that was powered by air turned by the windmill.

good luck…
Awesome, thanks, The Quest, gotta rent it now…the first scary movie I ever saw, and started my horror love…
I see now why I could never find it, I always thought it was the same kid from Flight of the navigator, not ET.

admin answers:

THE QUEST (1986) aka Frog Dreaming

NOTE: I have never seen it listed under the second name, which is why it took me a bit longer to find links to verify my claim. I remember renting this when we had a tape rental place just down the block. I found “Nomads” there. Have you seen this Pierce Brosnan film? It’s a good horror film, too.

Henry Thomas stars in this unusual mystery film. None of the summaries describe the movie I’ve watched several times. You description is much better~the monster in the quarry that turns out to be an abandoned piece of equipment. I think the natives call it the “Donkegin” or something like that. The review at the bottom of the IMDB page is a lot more helpful I think.

I’m right! I found a site that agrees with the name above. For a while, I wondered if I had movies all mixed up. Other sites kept referring to frogs, and I remembered the creature that seemed to be in the lake.

Sandra asks…

1980′s kids horror film?

It was about a boy at a lake that had a monster in it. There was a large metal windmill that spun everytime the monster popped up. There was also a kind of digger that was haunted and was the monster itself.

Doing my head in trying to remember the title.
