Your Questions About Windmills

Michael Your Questions About Windmills

Michael asks…

Does the power generated by windmills affect the speed of the wind?

Would locations behind the windmills be windier if they weren’t there? Explain in terms of energy conservation.

I have this question for homework, but I don’t understand it at all. Any help is appreciated.

admin answers:

Yes. Windmills produce a low pressure area behind them which causes birds to collide with the windmill and die.

In terms of energy, the wind has kinetic energy and then the windmill gets kinetic energy from the wind – obviously the wind must lose energy.

What are some disadvantages of windmills?

I need to debate about the disadvantages of the appearance of windmills.
I already know that they carry a lot of noise and aren’t a nice site to some people.
Anything else I can add? The debate has to be one minute long and I’ll be lucky if I have 30 seconds…

Just above your question there is a button called “Search Answers”. A minute ago, I typed “disadvantages of windmills” into the pane and got dozens of answers. Do the same and you will get your answers straight away — no waiting, no delay. Make sure you read a few answers so as to avoid bias — some people are pro-windmill and others are anti-windmill.

Chris Your Questions About Windmills

Chris asks…

What are some trusted sources of information of windmills? Also, recommend a book on it?

I have to create an essay about windmills and how it is more efficient as a reliable energy source. Besides wiki, can anyone find a new source of info?

admin answers:

The first link below covers the history of windmills extensively, but only just touches on modern day wind power sources. It does have a great selection of book references though, including several discussing their history and modern day value.

The American Wind Energy Association (second link below) has a staggering amount of information, resources, articles, events, etc. It also has a selection of books available (though most of the sources on the site will most likely be able to provide you with answers).

It’s impressive the size, scope and reach of this organization. Oh, and the baseball caps in their online store are really cool!

Ruth Your Questions About Windmills

Ruth asks…

Why do windmills have vertical blades and not horizontal spokes with vertical discs at the end?

Just wondering why do windmills have vertical blades and not horizontal spokes with discs or cups attached at the end of each spoke vertically! I feel the latter way would be better and more effective to rotate the gears and generate more electricity.

admin answers:

They take up much more “land”. They have much larger footprints. The height of an object does not affect this footprint. Large-scale horizontal turbines would take up huge amounts of space, and it would be difficult to stack them horizontally.
