Helen asks…

I just dropped a energy saving lightblub!! Did I breathe in the poisonous gases now?? What do I do?

I just dropped one of those energy saving flourescent lightbulbs. (with the long, bent tubes) I once heard that these have to be taken care of specially when they don’t work any more, because you’re not allowed to break them because then they release poisonous gases! But I just dropped one! So did I release poisonous gases, and did I breathe them in? And what happens if I did?
And what do I do with the remains of the lightbulb??

admin answers:

By law you have to call the fire department. They will send out a haz-mat team to sanitize your house. It shouldn’t cost more that $3,000 to clean it up.

You and your family are in danger of breathing in mercury gasses.

Steven Your Questions About Save Energy Now

Steven asks…

Have you switched the light bulbs in your house or apartment to Energy Saving bulbs yet?

I just bought an Energy Saving bulb that uses 15 watts of electricity but produces the same amount of light as a 60 watt bulb. It is supposed to last 5-6 years too. Over the life of the new bulb I am supposed to save approximately $35 on my electric bill. I will not lie, the Energy Saving bulb was expensive–about $7–but I think it was a wise investment.

Are you going to switch to Energy Saving light bulbs now that you know how much you can save? Don’t forget, you will be cutting down on carbon emissions considerably.

admin answers:

I’ve switched some of them. They don’t work as well for decorative lighting; the warm glow produced by incandescent bulbs can’t be reproduced with flourescents.

Too, you need to dispose of the fluorescent bulbs in an environmentally safe manner. These lamps contain small amounts of mercury, as well as more hardware in the base than is contained in an incandescent bulb. They should not be simply thrown into the trash.

You should also make sure that you are using newer ones. Some of the old ones had the potential to cause fires.

How can I get to turn my monitor off automatically to save energy…?

after leaving my PC unused? Right now after leaving my PC unused for a few minutes, my screen saver comes on but remains on continuously. If continued to be unused I think that there is a provision in the OS (Win XP) that will turn the monitor dark until disturbed.

admin answers:

Yes there is. Under power options in the control panel you can specify the time for the screen saver to cut in and also for the monitor to cut off (PC to go to sleep mode).
