Trachycarpus Fortunei (Windmill Palm) Planting help?

I have 3 trachycarpus fortunei in my garden (each roughly about 6″4), and one of them has a bunch of seeds ready for replanting according to the book and sites on the net.

The problem is that I do everything required, and the seeds just don’t sprout. I keep them in warm places, and go by the book… why arent they sprouting?!

Thanks.

admin answers:

I recommend cleaning the seeds of all berry residue, as this contains a natural chemical inhibitor of germination. Once cleaned of this, I soak my Trachycarpus in warm clean water for 1 – 2 days, and rinse with a 1:10 weak dilution of bleach, which kills fungal or other infectious spores.

Place your seeds in slightly damp vermiculite, seal and keep in a warm position, where you should get sprouting from around a month – they can be sporadic germinates, meaning that some will still shoot many months after the others: some of your own seeds may still be fine, it just may be that they need a little longer, or have decayed.

Overall, my main test for Palm seed viability is whether the seeds sink or float – the floaters usually have far less potential for growth, though this is not an absolute.

Overall, I’d encourage you to also get some seeds from another source, other than your own plants, so that you could compare. It’s highly unlikely that 3 plants would each produce seed that won’t grow, and I note that you’re following your method to the letter also. (I don’t know whether it differs much from mine).

I learned many years ago that many of my discarded Palm seeds would sprout months after I’d given up on them, so it may be worth hanging on to them a little longer, or even trying out the float test, to see if the seeds have any indication for potential growth.

Aim to keep the temperature as steady as possible too, as this will help. Final option, that I used to use, was to place pots outdoors at the end of winter, to give the seeds a little chill, that they could naturally find in their home environment, before placing them in heat again. Don’t be wary to check for infections on the seed, nor be concerned about cleaning them briefly with a part bleach solution. If you find that any purchased seeds also won’t sprout, you’ll know it’s more about technique than seed viability.

Final tips/ideas – fresher seed is easier to germinate than older seed, as the growth rate diminishes with time. You could also potentially swap seeds with someone who also grows them, and see how they get on with your seeds. If I was local, I’d happily help you with this.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

If Jesus had a one hour special on HSN (Home Shopping Network) what would he sell?

My guess is he’d sell little wooden garden windmills and bridges (trolls and gnomes sold separately.)

admin answers:

Little wooden bobblehead “Dashboard Jesus” figures, to be placed right between a donkey’s ears. Jesus Fish branding irons, the equivalent of today’s bumper stickers.

At what point is “going over board” when it comes to lawn decor, such as statues, windmills, coloured lights?

I like decorating my lawn and garden but haven’t done so because I didn’t want it to look gaudy like some people have little garden gnomes and ceramic ducks and such all over the yard. So, I was just wondering what everyone else’s opinions on this would be.

admin answers:

If you like lawn ornaments then a few are fine. When people start slowing down to look at the crazy yard, then it is too much. I would say three things in the front yard would be plenty. But you should do what you like and not worry about what anyone else thinks.
