Energy saving advice, can you give me some tips on how to save some energy in my apartment ?
my fiance and I are concerned about our rising electric bill and of course we are trying to do our part for the environment as well, yes we recycle, and never ever litter, but i need some hints on how to lower our energy consumption in our home. also, is it better to leave the pc on all night or to turn it off….?
admin answers:
Compact flourescent bulbs will decrease your electricity bill, but they contain mercury, which is not allowed in the household waste destined for landfill, so you’ll need to take trips to the hazardous waste depot to dispose of them.
Put things like tv, vcr, dvd etc on a power bar, and shut it off when not in use – to avoid consuming ‘phantom power’. Same with pc, monitor and printer.: put it on a power bar, and switch off when not in use. Switch to inkjet instead of laser printers – laser printers have a high wattage heater inside that melts the ink onto the paper.
If your apartment space and water is not heated by natural gas, consider moving to one that is, as natural gas is much cheaper to heat with than electricity.
Electricity is rated in kilowatt-hours, and i pay about 7 cents for each kilowatt-hour. A kilowatt is 1000 watts, so if I leave 10 light bulbs on for an hour, and each bulb is 100 watts, it costs me 7 cents.
Adjust your fridge or freezer to the minimum power consumption that food safety will allow. (4 °C for fridge, i think) consult fightbac.org for more details.
Adjust your programmable thermostat for 21 °C in winter and 26°C in summer, when occupied, and have it switch off when you’re not home, or asleep (if you have enough blankets).

Any Energy Saving Tips for the summer?
Does anyone know some energy saving tips for the summer?
I gotta deal with tons of customer very soon! So I better get ready! HAHA
admin answers:
There are tons of things people can do to save energy in the summer.
The big energy user in summertime is keeping cool. So:
- Install window fans. Draw cool air in through downstairs windows and warm air out from upstairs windows at night when it’s cooler out. Shut the windows and curtains/blinds as soon as the sun comes out. We keep our house comfortably cool this way through the sweltering summers of Toronto without ever resorting to air conditioning.
- Get your central AC check-up at the start of the cooling season. A properly operating AC will use a lot less electricity than one that has been neglected year after year. Change or clean the filters. Upgrade any AC older than 10 years to a new ENERGY STAR rated model.
- Use passive cooling techniques: awnings, curtains, shutters, plant shade trees on the side of the house facing sun and sunset.
- Make sure your attic is properly ventilated. Poor attic ventilation allows heat to build up in the attic during the day and to radiate downward (typically into the bedrooms) at night.
- Install an attic exhaust fan, which sucks warm air from the upstairs of your house out into the attic, draws cool air in from the windows, and pushes the hot attic air out.
- Upgrade insulation. When we redid our second floor we went from 4 inches of very old, compacted, blown cellulose insulation to 6 inches of Roxul insulation. We lost a bit of floor space but the difference in keeping the house cool in summer is noticeable.
- Dress for summer, and take cold showers! Keeping your body cool will reduce your need for cool air.

What are the most unconventional but practical tips for saving energy?
well, I try to avoid using my blowdryer when I don’t have to go out of the house…how about yours? any tips you’d like to share?

Wow what mean answers maybe that is because I do live like a tribe in the forest.
I do my laundry in a wrinder washer outside by my clothes line. The wringer uses less power because you can decide how long it washes and also it uses much less water because you keep putting clothes in the same water starting with light going to the dirty clothes last then rince the same way. Then I hang them on the line to aviod using the dyer.
I love doing it this way. I can hear the birds sing and watch the wildflife as I do this chore.

Can u give me 10 energy-saving tips?
cause my electric bill is rapidly going up and i really really have to save energy
admin answers:
1 Replace incandescent lights with led or CFLs
2 Make sure your doors and windows are not drafty by installing weatherstripping or caulk.
3 Put any electronics that have standby modes on a power strip to kill phantom loads.
4 If you aren’t using something make sure you turn it off.
5 Get a programable thermostat
6 Wash clothes in cold water
7 If you have areas of your house that are not in use for long periods close them off, so that you don’t have to heat and cool them.
8. Consider upgrading your windows (storm windows, double, triple pane, film covers)
9 Buy a Kill-a-watt meter or something like it to see which items waste the most electricity and then upgrade them. (A ten year old chest freezer will use more electricity in one year than it would cost to buy a more energy efficient freezer)
10 In the summer use attic/ceiling fans to help cool you.

What are some tips on saving energy?
Does Blackle really work in saving energy?
admin answers:
Yes, it saves energy as a white screen takes more energy to power. I’d say turning off other lights in the house would do a lot more than having a dark screen for saving energy though.

Energy saving tips?
I just got my first energy bill and its a little rough. I live on the 6th floor of a huge apartment complex in Chicago. What can I do/buy to use less energy other than the obvious, turn off lights..ect.
admin answers:
If you are paying for heat in your apartment then make sure you are not getting cold air coming in thru your windows. If you are then seal your leaks with caulking or shrink wrap insulation for the winter, check out your local DIY store for more info. Also don’t forget to insulate any outside wall electrical outlets that might be letting in cold air. There are special insulation applications you can put on them behind the wall plates to help with this and every little bit helps. If you do your own wash in your apartment – wash in cold water with cold water soaps. I do this at home and clothing is just as clean as washing in hot water and it does save not having to heat up the hot water tank all the time. If you are using a dishwasher make sure it is full each time you use it. Reduce your heat in your apartment and put on a sweater to save energy and also reduce heat when you are not at home – this can be accomplished more effieciently if you have a timer thermostat installed.
Hope these tips helped you out.
