Windmill Palm Tree in zone 5 (Iowa)?
I would love to have a windmill palm tree. We have an above ground pool and it would look so nice by it. Could it possibly survive here? Or could I have one as an indoor plant and keep it potted? Or keep it potted and move it inside in the winter?
Thanks.

I grow Trachycarpus fortunei in England, and they are also known to grow in Manhattan, though I’m sure these 2 places are warmer in winter than Iowa.
There is hope for you, as you can protect yoru palm in winter time, either keeping it potted, and then moving it to a sheltered spot, or inside with good levels of sunlight.
The other option used by many growers of tender plants is to construct a protective enclosure around your palm. This could be made from wooden posts, surrounded with plastic, and then filled with straw/dried leaves. You can also add some garden fleece over your palm, which keeps the temperature below a few degrees warmer, but allows light and moisture to pass through. As your palm matures it will get somewhat hardier, but it is important to protect its growing point, as it grows from this single point – this is where you could pack some more protection. Otherwise, you could add some old carpet etc, on really freezing nights, to give extra protection, or form some type of tent over it. There’s one growers experience here, from Colorado Springs – http://hometown.aol.com/fitzroya/myhomepage/cooking.html (they also mention other cold hardy palms).
Hope this helps – let me know if you’d like any further help, as I grow many palm species. Good luck! Rob

Windmill Palm tree help?
I ordered this windmill palm for Georgia, it took about a week to get here and didn’t look good at all when it got here. I’v planted it in a pot because it’s too cold to take outside right now. It’s not looking any better or worse than when it got here. The leaves are drying up, turning yellowish brown, and it looks pretty much dead! What can I do to save this poor tree!
Here is a picture of the tree: http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t77/lachicabonita_1992/IMG00065-20100505-1047.jpg

I agree 100%. Ive gotten all 3 of my windmill palms off ebay for a price range of around 7-10 dollars (im not going to say the name of the seller since that might be considered advertising). But they were 3 gallon plants and looked very nice. Ive never seen leaves that awful looking before on a windmill palm. I have 1 gallon seedlings that are small but have leaves that are much thicker and less stringy.
I would ask for a refund or at least get a new one.
Also what are the temps by you? I planted mine last year and it saw 30F without damage. This winter it went down to 14F with no damage, but I dont think it would handle that until established.
Good luck!

How often should I water a Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei)?
I am going to plant in a pot the seed of a Windmill
Palm, but I do not know how often I should water it. I have read that it doesn’t need much water, but to only maintain it in moist soil. How often should I water Windmill Palm? Do I water everyday? Do I water it with a drinking class of water (the size of a common cup found in a home)? Do I water it only once a week? Does anyone know how often I should water it and how much water it should receive?

There are fertilizers that are best suited for palms. They usually contain the minor elements that palms require. Those are elements like iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and boron. Here is just one type of food.

What is the best time of year to move a palm tree?
Its about 5 ft tall (not including fronds) and it is a windmill palm.
We want to move it to a place in our backyard where there is more sun, but what is the best time of year to do so?
We live on the west coast of British Columbia so we have a Sub-Mediterranean climate.

We had to plant our palm tree into the ground, and it was about as big as your is now.We live in So.California so the weather is much different, but it doesn’t matter where you live all plants can be transplanted when they are in their bare root stage. That means ,when they are dormant for the season( no or little growth). I would wait until late September – March or early April. Then make sure you mulch the hole with some good potting soil mixed with sand before putting it into the hole. After that ,use “Quick Start”.That prevents transplant shock. You can feed it the following spring with some Palm Feed.It will grow very fast,so consider that before you plant it.That is one thing I thought I did,but now ours is so big,I’m starting to worry.Good Luck,Byee
