Mark asks…
When is the first known historical use of windmills and how was it used?
I’m writing a paper on the advantages of wind energy over traditional power generation methods (ie. coal, nuclear, etc.), and I need a section on the history of wind energy. Obviously, this would be windmills. So I ask (since I can’t find it anywhere): What was the first known use of windmills, and what was it used for? Please include your sources, and please make them RELIABLE, such as .edu or .gov web addresses, books, etc, as I will be citing these sources in my paper. Thanks!
admin answers:
Well, the term windmill itself comes from mill.
Because they were originally used in Milling. But the advantage of a windmill over a water mill, is that you don’t need water.
The first windmills were invented in Persia, in the 9th century. These windmill had a vertical axis. (meaning they rotated like a helicopter.)
The first “traditional” windmills were used in the 12th century, Europe.
They were used, like I said, as mills. For grains.

Stimuloot gives Billions for Chinese Made Windmills. Is this the start of Outsourcing the Energy Industry?
Apparently the EPA will not allow the huge Carbon Fiber Windmills to be made in America because the Epoxy Resins are extreme Polluters
So in the spirit of Save the Whales Are we Moving our dirty Industry to China to save the Big Fat American Whales
Or is this just more Industrial Tycoon Greed.

Can windmills also act as solar power generators?
Windmills are out in the open spaces and very high. Could we not wrap solar panels around them to create even more energy ?
admin answers:
Sure we/you COULD… However, what is the point? The area of the ground below is more efficiently covered with solar electrical panels than the body of a tower with a wind powered generator on top. There is NO point in using the smaller area of the top of a tower than simple plain open space at ground level… Besides, when you do the daily/weekly cleaning to remove dust, it is MUCH more practical to clean panels at ground level than a hundred feet in the air… Note that wind towers are FAR apart to reduce turbulence from one tower causing problems with the air flow of the next tower. Haven’t you wondered WHY wind towers are hundreds of feet tall and hundreds of feet apart? You would better use the flat space BETWEEN the towers than the actual towers themselves… Use some common sense already!

With time how long does it take to learn how to do windmills?
I want top learn how to do windmills within the duration of 2 months.
Is it possible.? Any b-boys know?
admin answers:
It is definitely possible. I’ve got a close friend who bearily knows all of the basics and can almost do the windmill after only 6 days. Most of it is collapsing on your arm once you get to the freeze.
The spin is all momentum, so you need to make sure to have your legs spread at all times to gain speed.
Just get a good teacher, and 2 months you should be able to do it, but maybe not fluently.

Betty asks…
How big do you think the blades on those energy windmills are?
There are some HUGE windmills in West Texas…the white ones that produce electricity etc. How big do you think the blades on these things are???
admin answers:
I paced out a blade just off a ship docked at Olympia, WA. One half was 125 ft, so total it would be 250 ft.

Mandy asks…
Does anyone believe that windmills are no more than a blot on the landscape?
There are many other forms of clean energy..Best examples are nuclear and fossil fuels cleaned so as not to cause much pollution when burned,
Windmills are noisy and to many are needed to generate a small amount of energy – Also in another conflict in Europe they would be open to attack as easy prey.
admin answers:
Let’s see…they’re expensive to build, they’re in constant need of repair, they have a short life span, they are heavily subsidized and they are inefficient. True Believers love them, and they love it even more that taxpayers have to pay through the nose for these things.
