David Your Questions About Save Energy Pictures

David asks…

How much energy cost will I save with an LED TV?

I’m looking at purchasing a Samsung HDTV. I am comparing both the LCD and the LED options they have available. Assuming I don’t care that much about the difference in picture, the biggest difference seems to be the cost, and the amount of energy they use. If the LED model uses 40% less energy, as it claims, how much savings is that for me, assuming 100 hours of use per month.

admin answers:

Samsung is the master in marketing deception.

They advertise 40% power reduction but don’t provide ANY power numbers for either their LCD or LED models. A typical LCD consumes about 150-200 W, even if the 40% is true (which I doubt), we are talking 200 W vs 120 watts. 80 Watts x 100 hrs is 8 KWh , or about $1.60/month (at 20c per kWh).

What desktop background color/picture saves the most energy/battery power, i.e most efficient?

trying to pick out a desktop picture that will give me the most battery power

admin answers:

Not a huge diffrence in choice of colour,
But select no wallpaper, have the colour black and drop the colours down to 16bit instead of 32bit…

Saying that, this will not have a huge effect on you machine.

compare picture window single pane with energy star window?

i have a single pane picture window 93.75″x64″. If I replace it with an energy star window (u30) is it worth it in energy savings? How many gallons of oil could I expect to save per month.

admin answers:

You would have to have an Energy Star rep come to your house and run the numbers for you to figure out the actual savings based on your square footage, the other windows in the room etc.

However, we’ve been replacing a bunch of our old single pane windows throughout our house with Energy Star windows and discovered that the rooms are definitely warmer, quieter, and much less drafty. You’ll no doubt recover your investment within 2-3 years plus should be eligible for a 30% tax credit too.

Why does the lightbulb in the “Tip” bubble when asking a question look like one of those energy-saving bulbs?

Is this Yahoo!’s way of showing their support of environmentalism? Or is it just something whimsical and quirky?

(Just to be clear, here is a picture of what I’m talking about: http://img357.imageshack.us/my.php?image=asdfghjkkq3.png )

admin answers:

Yep it is a energy saving light bulb. They are making reference to saving energy to writing out just the right words. But yes yahoo is “green” but if they would like to be more green they would make there background black inside of white to save energy.

Tried taking close up pictures with white background but always turn out grey? I’m using Canon 550D / rebel?

Hi,

I own a Canon 550d and I currently shoot close up pictures with a white background with the 18-55mm zoom lense. The subject seem to trun out ok except for the actual white background, it turns out to be a grey color when I load up to my computer.

The only light source are my room light bulb (low wattage energy saving type) and a soft box with a daylight bulb close up on the subject matter. i use a flash and I use Manual mode with auto focus. I have tried increasing the ISO with no affect, have also tried increasing the flash or decreasing, still had no affect. Also tried lowing the depth of field but the whole picture was too contrasted ( bright)

What could I be doing wrong? could the limited light source i.e low watt lenergy light bulb, in my room be a problem?

any help very much appreciated. Thank you very much.

admin answers:

Use spot metering and meter onto the subject, this will cause the background to become whiter and then use exposure compensation to increase the exposure and make the background brighter if you need to. Just remember to check white balance carefully and also you won’t get the best results with such basic lighting unfortunately.

How much energy does a Plasma Screen TV really consume?

I bought one of those plug in energy meter things to measure how much energy my appliances are consuming.

My 46″ LCD TV is rated at 260W. But in actual fact it was only using 205W because of brightness settings, backlight settings etc. I then twiddled around with the settings lowering the brightness, backlight and put the Energy saving setting (which dims the backlight furth) to high and got a reading of only 77 watts but the picture is too dark.

So I have now put the energy saving setting on Medium to make the picture brighter for everyday use so it is using 89watts and a button to make it brighter when needed, like in daytime viewing, which bumps it up to 147 watts.

Any way, I just wanted to know if any Plasma screen owners have done the same thing and what were their results on measuring the actual electricty consumption.

admin answers:

Hello my sister got a 50″ samsung plasma and I tested its power usage with a very accurate HEME ISO 2000 clamp meter it consumes 524 watts on the settings she uses from day to day , my 52″ Sony LCD tv uses 282 watts, I often wonder what the sales figures of plasma TVs would be if people were made fully aware of just how power hungry plasma TVs are and I think you are a star for being interested in what everyday electronic items use in terms of watts, its a Great pity to me that most are just not bothered about energy wastage, maybe one day in the future when a barrel of oil cost $400 or more maybe then people will be bothered.
