How can i save energy at school?
Im doing a project on energy, and i need some tips
admin answers:
When it comes to helping the environment, little efforts already constitute a great deal. Some simple ways to save energy are:
a) turn off the lights or any electronic appliance in your school when not in use, keeping in mind that turning off an appliance and then turning it on again when needed actually saves more energy than leaving it on till you come back to use it again.
B) recycle, reduce, and reuse. The manufacturing of new products consumes more energy. A nice place to start these 3R’s is the school, where careless consumption of materials are often present.
C) for a grander effect that leads to the more “gratifying” feeling inside, not to mention more laughs and smiles, encourage your friends and family to get involved in the call to help Mother Nature, a wonderful experience through nature campaigns, fund drives, etc.

Ways to save energy?
So, I’m doing a project about ways we can save energy at school. I need at least six. Thank you in advance! ![]()

Here are a few to choose from:
Take public transport instead of the car all the time.
Turn out lights when they are not needed.
Turn appliances off at the wall socket (e.g. TV’s). (When on standby they still draw some current, and this mounts up.)
Choose not to use plastics, as these are oil based and use a lot of energy to manufacture.
If technically feasible, install alternative energy sources. Solar heating for water, solar power panels or home-sized wind generator to supplement power, etc.
Only heat occupied rooms in winter, and only air-con occupied areas in summer.
Rely more on open windows and natural air-flow for cooling in summer.

Why can’t we use this energy saving idea?
I had an idea about saving electricity, the lights in schools and many public buildings waste so much electricty and heat in running. ( I am talking about those lights with the long flourescent tube lights). My idea is since these lights use at least 3 tube bulbs per light that it would be cost effective and energy savvy to install or creaste a tech that shuts off one tube in one light in the room and alternates to save electricty, make the bulbs and last a LOT longer! My second idea was these bulbs can get hot and school heating costs are pretty expensive so maybe a vent or some duct could gather the heat that forms near the bulbs and it could be used to heat the room partially. I know these are small ideas but hey the world needs them right? Schools (and many large buildings) already use auto turn on and off sinks and auto flush toilets which are a step in the right direction and i think this would really help over time. My ideas i think would be a small way of helping but it would add up in savings. The thing is everyone i tell says they are dumb and stupid ideas, are they? Should i think more broadly or about other ways to save electricty? Thanks
Also shutting off one tube in a room with like 10 of these lights wouldn’t affect the overall brightness of the room and i understand good lighting is essential for being able to read and learn. Also please don’t comment dorragitory or insulting comments.

These are not bad ideas at all, but you must also think practically. What technology is required to implement and maintain these changes? How much would it cost taxpayers to install these technologies in every classroom? What energy would be required to run the computers and software required to turn on and off the lights? How much heat is produced by these computures that needs offset by cooling to keep the computers from overheating? Same thing for the light ducts for heat tranfer. Heat rises so you would need some fans to push the warm air down to the floor so it can radiate upwards. You need power to run the fans, and money to install all these fans, and then you have to rip apart the walls and floors and ceiling to install the ducts. Workers must drive gas powerd vehicles to the schools to do the work… All these thing use energy in some form. Don’t let me get you down though, I agree with some of your ideas. If they were done in new constructions, planned from the start, some of these things could save some energy. I just want to be real with you here. The financial costs to make changes like this are strongly opposed by many people in society. Many don’t see any reason to save energy or protect the environment and guess what… They won’t be the ones who are stuck dealing with the consequenses of their actions. You will be, you and your children must deal with global climate change, and the colapse of biodiversity, the cost of oil shortages. The older lawmakers and polititians don’t seem to care what happens after they are gone. Yes, it sucks. That is why there needs to be more people like you, that care about these things and create new ideas that save energy. Don’t let anyone tell you that thinking about inovation is stupid, it is the foundation of what made mankind great. Inovation and creativity drive the world so keep it up.

What more things can you replace? I have replace light bulbs with energy-saving ones. What else can you do?
What things can you replace at school that saves more energy??
What can the school do to help save energy??

I hate to break it to you, but most schools already have fluorescent lights.

Energy and Environment Week at school…?
I’m in charge of coming up with different activities for a Go Green week at school. For each day, there is a different dress up thing-
Ex: Superhero Day – dress as your own superhero “out to save the environment!”
or Green Day – dress in green
Things like that, I need help, any ideas on what the days can be?
Or any ideas on any projects I could suggest?

Environmental Engineering is an option. I completed a civil engineering degree at university with a few environmental electives and ended up taking a job with an environmental engineering company when I graduated. My job deals with testing of soil, water and air to ensure they are clean and not causing any adverse impacts on human health or the environment. By meeting other people who work in this area has also taught me a lot about saving energy, recycling and living in a more sustainable way.
