benefits of solar roof fan?
is it a benefit during lower temoeratures
admin answers:
Attic ventilation is necessary in both summer and winter. In both seasons fresh air enters the attic through gable or soffit vents and exits through ridge vents or other devices such as roof fans. In the summer this helps to cool the attic, thereby relieving stress on your air conditioner. In the winter moisture is reduced in the attic and keeps your insulation from becoming wet, which reduces it’s efficiency.

Sandy asks…
what is the cost of installation to replace a regular roof fan with a solar one?
admin answers:
You mean ceiling fans? Usually electrical contractors are in the field of configuring solar devices for homes, so I would think your best bet would be to contact some local electrical contractors in your area.
So, yeah, your best bet is also to seek the advice of local electrical contractors, since they usually install them. Free estimates from local electrical contractors (who hook up solar panels, etc.) are the key to your success in this home improvement project of yours. Here’s a great link to a handyman site that offers free very resourceful information to assist you in your project, and, ultimately, selecting a local electrical contractor in an effort to get the best deal for you:

Michael asks…
I replaced a roof fan. How much tar do I need to use?
The instructions for the old one (a solar fan) didn’t have me use much tar, but the new one basically says to go crazy with it. I have the feeling that the new company is covering their butts against leaks. The roof has about a 45 degree pitch. For instance, do I need to tar along the ‘vertical’ sides of the fan?
Thanks!
admin answers:
They’re not trying to cover their butts – you already made the purchase. Their helping you to cover your own butt. Apply the black jack on the entire horizontal surface 3 inches past the flange and at least 3 inches up on any vertical surface. Then lay back down any shingles you may have removed and reapply another coat of black jack in the corners.

Mandy asks…
Is 600$ labor a fair price to install 3 solar powered roof fans on a cape code style home with a steep roof.?
bout this house in the winter and ready to move by the summer, the 2nd floor is unbearable due to the heat. After moving in I notice the house didn’t have any ventilation in the roof. Had roofer come out today and he quoted 600$ if I bout the fans.
admin answers:
Bout = a brief fight or conflict
bought = past tense of buy
$600 sounds a little steep to me, but then again you say the roof is steep too. That makes the job more difficult, more dangerous. Considering he has to carry insurance and see that the job is done safely, not to mention be sure it’s done well enough he doesn’t get a call someday saying there’s rain coming in around the fans, $600 might not be too bad.
Read up on the fans. How confident do you feel doing the job yourself? Is $600 too much to assuage your doubts as to whether you can start, finish and be certain the job is done correctly? If it’s too much, it’s too much – but then you’re on the hook for doing it.

Mark asks…
How is the solar attic fan activated?
I moved in a house on the roof of which, a solar attic fan is installed. How is the solar attic fan activated? When I run A/C or heat or fan by clicking buttons in the control panel, does the solar attic fan also runs accordingly? Or, is there usually a separate switch button to activate the solar attic fan? What is the impact or role of the attic fan on reducing humidity in the house? For example, can I remove water condensation problem occurring inside of air duct when the attic fan runs in the optimal schedule? Thank you in advance.
admin answers:
Hey S, the solar fan has no wiring or controls. This is how it works. The attic only absorbs heat when the sun shines on the roof of the house. Once enough sun is hitting the roof, enough is hitting the small solar panel built into the fan housing, and the fan begins to run. The brighter the sun, the faster the solar fan runs, so it helps keep the attic cool by increasing the airflow through the attic as the solar heating increases as well. At dusk, the fan begins to slow until the sun is no longer strong enough to power the panel, which happens to be when the sun is no longer heating the attic either. They are a farily simple device, we have one on our boat that works the same way, drawing air through the cabin whenever the sun is shining on the deck making things warmer. If you can confirm it is running, either by hearing it on a sunny day, or putting your hand on it and feeling it run, then it does not need any service, just leave it be. Good luck, Rudydoo

George asks…
Is there a small solar panel available that would provide enough power to run a small space heater or fan?
I live in a townhouse and the association doesn’t allow roof top solar panels or anything that is visible from the street.
admin answers:
I found one here that can deliver 1.25 amps at 120V. This may just run a small fan, but you would need 10 of them to run a small space heater. I guess it would be your call……… Hope this helps.

Linda asks…
would a solar fan benefit my attic?
I have two finished rooms in my attic. It gets SO hot up there in the summer you can’t stand it. I bought an attic fan and installed it in one of the windows, and it helps alittle bit, but I was wondering if a solar fan would help alot. The thing I’m most concerned about is the two finished rooms have a dropped ceiling, so the fan would be installed in the roof and not open to the living area. Would it still benefit to cool that area between the dropped ceiling and the roof rafters?
I probably should add that this area of the attic has heat and air running to it. Each room has one small vent which supplies the air or heat to it. It’s just that when you are running the air conditioner or heater, you don’t even notice it up there, unless you are standing right by the vents.
